Art Gallery of Ballarat

The Art Gallery of Ballarat cares for a permanent collection of more than 12,600 works, including paintings, sculpture and works on paper. Its principal building is closed for upgrades, while public exhibition activity continues through Backspace Gallery, Art Screen and the Ballarat Mining Exchange. The collection includes the Eureka Flag, which is on loan to the Eureka Centre, linking the gallery’s art holdings with one of Ballarat’s most closely associated historical stories.

Art Space Ballarat

Art Space Ballarat is a City of Ballarat exhibition venue for local emerging artists. Its changing public programme includes visual art, three-dimensional work and installations, with occasional performing arts events. Artists curate and install their own exhibitions, giving emerging practitioners a visible place within Ballarat’s arts precinct and making the space a useful counterpoint to larger institutional collections.

Post Office Gallery

Federation University’s Post Office Gallery occupies a former post office and presents contemporary exhibitions by Arts Academy students and alumni, university staff, and local, emerging and established artists. Selected works from the university’s art and historical collections connect current practice with the institution’s history from 1869 onward. The result is an exhibition setting where student, regional and established artistic perspectives can meet.

🏺 Goldfields history and interpreted places

Sovereign Hill

Sovereign Hill is an outdoor museum interpreting the 1850s Ballarat goldfields through recreated streets, shops, cottages, mine experiences and live demonstrations. Its interpretation draws on historical records and images, including François Cogné’s 1859 views of Main Road. The site also includes the Wadawurrung Cultural Precinct and a rebuilt Chinese Protectorate Camp, broadening the stories explored across the goldfields beyond mining alone.

Eureka Centre

At Eureka Stockade Memorial Park, the Eureka Centre interprets the Victorian gold rush, the Eureka Rebellion and its continuing cultural impact. Its centrepiece is the Eureka Flag, held by the Art Gallery of Ballarat and loaned to the centre. Around the building, monuments, significant trees and interpretive plaques trace later acts of remembrance at the Stockade site, adding a layered story about how the event has been remembered.

Ballarat Tramway Museum

The Ballarat Tramway Museum preserves the city’s street-tramway experience from 1887 to 1971. Visitors can ride heritage trams on an original section of track and explore the depot’s photographs, films, memorabilia and interpretive displays. Collection highlights include Ballarat Horse Tram No. 1, a 1905 Electric Supply Company of Victoria tram under reconstruction, and historic tramcars being restored, making transport history tangible through both objects and movement.

Ballarat Aviation Museum

At Ballarat Airport, the Ballarat Aviation Museum presents aircraft, engines, radios, cameras and aviation memorabilia. Static displays include a Wirraway, Dove, Flying Flea, Ligeti Stratos, Iskra cockpit section, Spruce Goose model and an early Australian-registered gyro. Missiles, a target drone, a Link trainer and records of No. 1 Wireless and Gunners School connect the objects with the former RAAF base’s aviation history.

Australian Centre for Gold Rush Collections

Part of Sovereign Hill Museums Association, the Australian Centre for Gold Rush Collections cares for more than 150,000 historical objects connected with Australia’s gold-rush story and its legacy. Its subjects include gold, jewellery, fashion, photography, cameras and objects reflecting Ballarat’s many communities. Behind-the-scenes tours, talks, workshops, education programmes and research bring material beyond conventional gallery displays into view.

Ballarat Research Hub at Eureka

The Ballarat Research Hub at Eureka brings together the City of Ballarat’s Australiana Research Collection, Public Record Office Victoria’s Ballarat Archives Centre and the Ballarat & District Genealogical Society collection. Researchers can work with historic books, public and private records, newspapers, maps, plans and indexes, with an Australiana Research Librarian available to assist with hard-copy and digital collections.

Ballarat Libraries Australiana Research Collection

Housed at the Ballarat Research Hub at Eureka, Ballarat Libraries’ Australiana Research Collection supports local and family-history research through historic books, records, newspapers, maps, plans and indexes. Its online local-history resources include digitised Ballarat and District Directories from 1858 to 1907. The heritage material also includes 27 original Theatre Royal playbills from gold-rush-era Ballarat, offering a vivid glimpse of the city’s entertainment history.
